Happy Birthday Prince! 6 Songs You Need To Play
07 Jun 2017
1. WHEN DOVES CRY.
WHEN DOVES CRY
Through his whimsical flair and creative genius, Prince had a way of turning a deeply emotive song into a dance hit - 'When Doves Cry' is the perfect example. It's easy to lose yourself in the catchy pop bravado without realising the heavy family drama behind the lyrics; exploiting a toxic relationship. This chart-topper made history in 1984, staying at number 1 for five consecutive weeks.
Memorable Lyric: "Why do we scream at each other, this is what it sounds like when doves cry."
2. PURPLE RAIN.
It's the power ballad that moved the music world, exerting passion, power and of course, a whole lot of emotion. 'Purple Rain' (1984), a movie track by Prince and The Revolution for Prince's same-title film, makes it almost impossible not to sing along or play the air guitar - especially with that epic guitar solo. Purple Rain (Superdeluxe Expanded Edition) available at JB Hi-Fi.
Memorable Lyric: "I only wanted to see you laughing in the purple rain."
3. LET'S GO CRAZY.
LET'S GO CRAZY
It was the "dearly beloved" opening that convinced fans worldwide that Prince was in fact, there with them "to get through this thing called life". From heaven-like organ playing to a sudden pop outburst, 'Let's Go Crazy' fast became the song to break free to, and when you blast this song at home - you'll know why. Still deemed one of the greatest openings of all time.
Memorable Lyric: "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today, to celebrate this thing called life."
It was the cheeky 90s tune from Prince's renowned 1991 album 'Diamonds and Pearls' that listeners found irresistible. With tracks like 'Get Off', 'Money Don't Matter 2 Night' and 'Insatiable' all on the same album, and not to mention the moaning at the start of the song, 'Cream' was clearly another catchy, sexploitive track from Prince that merely charmed the pants off audiences.
Memorable Lyric: "You're filthy cute, and baby you know it."
5. RASPBERRY BERET.
Prince's return to romance with 'Raspberry Beret', a beautifully written song of infatuation and love over the girl who wore a raspberry beret, proves one of his greatest works as a singer-songwriter. Prince's unique voice, combined with an unrivalled stage presence and bold wardrobe choices, effortlessly defied all odds.
Memorable Lyric: "She wore a raspberry beret, the kind you find in a second hand store."
According to Prince, turning him on was simple - you didn't have to be beautiful, he just needed your extra time and of course, your kiss. At the time of its 1991 release, 'Kiss' fast found a place on the top charts and inevitably, in the heart of every woman. Rumour has it, the legend wrote 'Kiss' while looking at himself in a mirror - makes sense though?
Memorable Lyric: "You don't have to be rich to be my girl, you don't have to be cruel to rule my world."
